Janne Haaland Matlary

Dr. Matlary is professor of international politics, Department of Political Science, University of Oslo and senior adjunct researcher in security policy at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs. Her main academic fields are the European Union and international security policy. She was State Secretary (deputy foreign minister) for Foreign Affairs of Norway, representing the Christian Democratic Party in the Bondevik government, from 1997-2000. Dr. Matlary is inter alia a member of the National Defence Commission of Norway and on the board of trustees of the Oslo Center for Peace and Human Rights. She is a member of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and consulter to the Pontifical Council for the Family in the Vatican, and occasionally acts as head or member of Holy See delegations to international conferences. She is a foreign policy advisor to the Furst von und zu Liechtenstein, as a member of his four-member Expertenrat fur Aussenpolitik and member of the Group of 100 World Leaders at the Davos World Economic Forum. She is a member of IESE’s (Business school, Barcelona) international advisory board, member of the board of trustees of the Social Trends Institute, N.Y., member of the board of The Swedish Defence College’s research group on strategy and member of the advisory council of the Norwegian think-tank CIVITA. She teaches human rights to Iraqi police chiefs under the Norwegian Police Program for training the police force of Iraq and writes and lectures on international management and human rights/CSR for corporate actors. She was a member of the Norwegian government’s expert commission on ethical guidelines for the national Petroleum Fund and the Ministry of Foreign Affair’s commission on profiling Norway (“Omdømmeutvalget”), 2003-2006. She is a contributing member of the editorial board of the weekly newsletter for managers, MandagMorgen Norge and a columnist on foreign affairs in the main daily Aftenposten and in the business daily Dagens Næringsliv.
